When reading a crochet chart, a series of loops(ovals) and lines are used to depict the stitch used. Below is the most commonly used stitch symbols and a description of the stitch. The loops depict the chain stitch. In the below examples I do not include the turning chain (ch-1 (-2,-3)) stitch that you normally add at the end of a row, but in patterns that you might read, they will be included so that you'll know how many turning chain stitches to make.
