A Day out on the Lake

Two sweet piglets, well look at that!
A day out sailing, but they should have brought hats.
The sun is so hot, as hot as can be.
Soon they'll be burned, and so will me.

Oh me, oh my, sailing under the bright blue sky.
I'm puzzled and awed, and happily applaud.
One piglet is clever and tells funny jokes,
The other is a joker and entertains all the folks.

It's a wonderful day to be out on the lake.
You should come join us!! For goodness sake.

Didn't We Have Dinner?

Where's my plate?

I admit there's a trick, if you look real close. There's a difference, but no hindrance to catching it for most. A guest came to dinner and was not amused. There was no plate for him to use and he felt abused. There were excuses and apologies, but the plate never did come. Now it's tomorrow and still no box to pull a plate from. Guest number two is going to be feeling awfully blue, when he finds he's out of time and the rumors all true. Turtle and Mouse Monster keep promising great fun, but when it comes to it, better through a fit, because the plates are all gone.

A Guest for Dinner

I don't have a plate.
Oh my, it must be fate.

But I don't have a plate.
I know, I'm sorry. But I'm afraid it's too late.

So I can't get a plate?
We have eight in a crate,
But I'm afraid they're in a different state
And it's too late to wait.
Perhaps we should reschedule to a different date?

Ok, let me know when you have an update.

One Sunny Day

Hey dad, did you mean to scare that guy?
No, I was just trying to say Hi.
Then why'd he run?
I guess he's afraid of fun.
We CAN be kind of slimy.
And it's not so easy to find me.
He was probably just surprised.
Yeah, that we're so tiny sized.

Crochet Starburst Square

Crochet Starburst Square

The crochet starburst square pattern is just a little something I've been working on and I think it has a a lot of potential. Add an extra row to make it larger or hundreds of little ones in different colors and sew them all together! At least, that's my plan.

Let's get started.

To start your Star, you need to make a 6-SC (SC=single crochet) magic ring OR, ch 2 (ch=chain) and add 6 SC to the 2nd chain from the hook. Sl st (Sl St=Slip Stitch) to the first SC to close the ring and chain 6 (this counts as your first TC = triple crochet).

Next, work a TC in the same stitch

Working a Triple Crochet (TC): Yarn Over (YO) twice and insert your hook in the stitch, YO, pull through 2 loops, YO, pull through 2 loops, YO, pull through 2 loops.

Next, Chain 2

Repeat the following all the way around: [TC, ch 2, TC in same stitch, Ch 2]

When you make it all the way around, Sl St in original Ch-6 and Fasten Off (FO).

For the third row, pick the color of your choice and Sl St in a ch-2 space.
In what will become a corner space add the following: Ch 3, DC, 2TC, 2DC
Add 3 DC in the next 2 spaces
This completes your first side of the square

In the next corner add the following: [2DC, 2TC, 2DC]
Then add 2DC in the next 2 spaces

Repeat 2 more times to complete the square, Sl St to first Ch 3 to close the row.

When you're ready, use any of my connection stitches to connect your squares together!

Zig Zag Connection

If you like this tutorial, check out some of my free patterns HERE!

The Zig Zag connection stitch is a fun way to crochet pieces together. It looks patchwork, like the pieces were sewn together and it's a relatively easy stitch to master.

First, line up your two pieces right side up and start in the corner. For this stitch, it works best to sew your pieces together in rows vertical and then horizontal. In the corner slip stitch and then chain 2

Take your hook out and insert it in the opposite square, grab your loop and pull it through the opposite square. Chain 2

Take your hook out and insert it in the opposite square one stitch down, grab your loop and pull it through the opposite stitch. Chain 2

Take your hook out and insert it in the opposite square two stitches down from the last, grab your loop and pull it through the stitch. Chain 2

Continue across until you get to the next corner.

To make the jump to the next corner, chain 3 and continue on through the next piece.

Ok, let me show you how you add the opposite row:

Same as before, slip stitch in the first corner, chain 2, continue the Zig Zag stitch until you get to the intersection. Chain 3 and continue on in the opposite corner. By adding the Ch 3 stitches in both directions you form a nice X in each intersection.

Continue across to the end.

And there you have it! Pretty nice right? This is the stitch I used to connect my Swirling Bliss Crochet Blanket.

Try it out and let me know what you think and definitely share the pictures!

Double Crochet Foundation Stitch

If you like this tutorial, check out some of my free patterns HERE !

Double Crochet Foundation Stitch

Like the single crochet foundation stitch, the DC foundation stitch is great for crochet work where you would normally create a starting chain and then add a row of double crochet. The foundation stitch is both of those at once. I like to use it when making blankets and scarves as it is a bit more stretch, easier to get consistent sizing, and blends better with the over project (no unsightly chain stitch showing).

So to make double crochet foundation stitch, first chain 4 like so:

Next, Yarn Over (YO) and insert your hook in the fourth chain from the stitch, YO and pull up a loop.

It looks a lot like your making a normal double crochet stitch right? Well, here's the difference:
Yarn over, and pull through the first loop only:

(Remember that loop! When we make our second DC Foundation stitch,
you're going to use this loop)

Now, work as a normal double crochet, YO, pull through 2 loops, YO pull through final 2 loops.

Ok, let's do it again. YO and inert your hook in the second loop from the knot (it's the one you made,  see at the bottom?), pull up a loop:

Next, YO and pull through the first loop

There you go, another loop to use for your next DC Stitch! Ok, let's finish is, YO, pull through 2 loops, YO, pull through 2 loops.

Done!! When you get it to the length you want, just chain 2, turn, and add a row of DC just like this:

Let me know what you think, and enjoy :)

Single Crochet Foundation Chain

If you like this free tutorial, check out some of my free patterns HERE !

Single Crochet Foundation Stitch

The single crochet foundation stitch is very useful for projects where you have a long row of single crochets of all the same color - like infinity scarves and blankets. Rather than making a chain 120 and then SC in each of those chains - some too loose, some too tight - try crocheting 120 single crochet foundation stitches and you complete both steps at once.

Also, foundation chains tend to have more stretch to them since they are made to the correct size all the way across. (see comment about chains being too loose or too tight)

To begin the single crochet foundation chain, first chain 3 as below:

Your first foundation stitch will be worked in the last look - 3rd from the hook.
Insert your hook, yarn over, and pull up a loop

Yarn over and pull through one of the loops on your hook.

Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook to complete your first foundation stitch.

To make your next foundation stitch, you're going to insert your hook in the third chain from the hook, yarn over, and pull up a loop:

Yarn over and pull through one loop on your hook.

Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook.

Now keep going until you create the correct number of single crochet foundation stitches. Once your done, chain 1, turn, and single crochet across the top:

And then just keep going until you're done.

Thanks again for visiting the Crochet By Karin site, I'd love to see some of your finished pieces, just post them here:

Gnome Morning Confessions

I have to admit...

I wasn't really singing when we sung that song,
I was pretending and moving my mouth along.
I was actually dreaming about being home,
And playing games on my phone.

Oh man, now I'm just going home.

Being free, that's me, living up in a tree.
I don't need fancy beds, or books to be read
Just me me me in a tree.

Elf or gnome, free to roam, I'm a happy little person and I'm so happy that you listened.
Have a happy happy Friday if you please!!!

Do I look ok?......don't want them to run away.

Just wish me luck OK?

A Pink Owl is Hooting

In a see of pink it makes me think. How I got to this place, how I can get to the sink.
It's a strange place, and I'm sitting in a daze. I'm all over, I'm lost in space.
Do you think you can catch me? Pull me free, I'd be happy to be out, happy to be me.
Ok, I'll just wait, no need to hurry your gait. It's just me we're talking about, no need to help me out.
No, no, it's cool. You go on sitting on that stool. I'm actually quite happy, no need to get sappy.
But it's quite lovely I'm sure, to be able to walk out that door. Quite lovely to be, free.

Pigs in a Jam

What are you guys up to?
Cassie said they were giving out sandwiches, we just had to line up.
Cassie the goat said that?
Yeah, cool right?
Cassie, the one that likes to eat your food when you're not around.
Yeah, sheesh, don't you know Cassie? She's always telling us about these great opportunities.
And what happened last time she told you about a great opportunity?
Oh, we got there too late and it was all sold out. That's why we're here now, nice and early.

Gullible
When the cookies are gone
And you feel you've done something wrong,
It may not be you,
You may have some sleuthing to do.
For example, if your friend,
Is sending you on chases that never have a good end,
You might want to consider,
That they may be a kidder.
Ask yourself this riddle,
Are they there with you, waiting in the middle?
If not,
I think you've got them caught.

[PS do not trust the people at work. (joking!) I'm constantly falling for 'it's raining!' scenarios and then discovering the sun is shining, tell me about your last head slapper on my Facebook or twitter:

I'm Just a Cat

I'm not just a cat,
Silly rat.
I live in a flat,
Not a cravat,
Like a bat.
I'm a cat
And kind of a brat.
So what do you think about that?
Rat.

I'm a pretty cat,
Don't you know.
I'm free as bird,
I go where I go.
No strings to tie me down,
No, no
I go where I go,
Don't you know.
What do you think about that?
Rat.

<You gotta sing it :)>

A Gnomish Celebration

Bring the drinks!
Bring the cheese!
Bring anything you please.

Just come to our fete
We'll eat everything you get!

We're not proud,
But we're loud
And we'll eat anything! We've vowed.

Be it liver,
Be it tripe,
We'll eat it and not gripe.

Why? Why not,
No one's ever said stop.
But please, please, no snot.

Wading into the Deep End of Summer

Springtime is our time to test the waters in this pool,
I know it's cold, sure I do, but I am am no fool.
You need to stick you toe in,
Or you'll never win.
You need to test each day,
It's the best way to get to play.
If you wait too long,
The summer will be long gone,
And the warm waters of spring,
Will be a long forgotten thing.
