(Multiple of 2, plus 2)
The Puff is another stitch that adds texture and dimension to an item. You can use the stitch to create a pattern in your work like pictures, horizontal or diagonal lines or to note a transition - line 3 lines at the hem of a skit.
The formula for the Popcorn stitch is any multiple of 2, plus 2...so any multiple of two! In this case I chained 16 loops. In this example I'm using a single crochet stitch for my intermediate rows, but hdc, dc, tc would all be good choices.
So after you chain your 16 loops, single crochet (sc) in the second loop from the hook and in every stitch across:
Next, chain 1 and turn.
The next row will be your popcorn stitch row. Before and after each popcorn you want to add a single crochet, this helps to make the stitch pop out.
|So here's our first sc stitch.|
First add a double crochet, but don't finish it. (Yarn over, insert your hook and pull up a loop, pull through 2 of the loops on your hook, stop!)
Repeat to add a second unfinished double crochet.
Repeat to add a third unfinished double crochet.
Pull a loop through all four loops on your hook to close the puff and...
Single crochet in the next stitch.
Repeat to the end adding a single crochet in the last stitch.
Here's the front view of your puff row.
Here's the backside where your puff stitches are sticking out.
To finish, add another row of single crochet stitches.
Let me know if you like the pattern and if you end up using it, send me a pick on Twitter or my Facebook site (see top right for links). I have a cool skirt up that's made using this stitch. If you get a chance to take a look, let me know what you think. Thanks guys, see you tomorrow and happy crocheting!
